Q: Y wont my UUC shift properly?
dear AWfolks,
newest problem in my life... my UUC.. do u guys have one? well, i have the 20,30,40 adjustable one, but it sux goin from 1st to 2nd, and vice versa. i really want the tanaga, but it is too capital intensive.
my problem basically is the clicking of my shifter--somtimes when i wish to go from 2nd to 1st, it goes to 3rd instead.
i think there's a way to remedy the situation. something about puttin washers at the bottom, to position the shifter higher, and therefore change the angle of shift.
but recently i've heard of a new cartridge bearing shifter... do u know anyting about it? u think it will really help my shifts?
do u know anything about either of these mods?
always needn assistance,

where are you located?
if in my area, I can help you. You may have
the bottom linkage hooking to the left instead
of the right. If that's not the problem, then
yes -- the tanoga shifter mod will help greatly --
ie: spacers to raise the shifter assembly resting
point.
you may just need to properly adjust your
shifter. took me 2 days of driving and constantly
fiddling with the bottom bolt to get it perfect.
if adjustment is your problem, I suggest you
keep a #6 hex bit and ratchet in the car...
leave the sound deadening and shifter plate off...
this way you can stop and adjust... drive...
stop and adjust... drive... etc. until you
get it perfect.
also... IMHO, 40% is the best... cartrige
bearing thingies did little at best...
and that's pretty much it.

Definitely just need adjustment.
Understand that in the neutral position, the stick should tilt slightly to the right, 3 degrees or so.
Now try this test: with the engine off, and the clutch depressed, go to 5th gear and note the left-right play in the ****. Now go to first gear and you will find that the **** will not move at all left-right.
The ideal setup is where the left-right play is identical between 1st and 5th gears (and so will be the same for 2nd and 6th).
You need to adjust the lower 6mm hex bolt on the shift rod, and tilt the shift lever slightly to the right until the above goal is accomplished.
Go to rs4.org for Tanoga installation instructions for more details. You only need to remove the sound cover and then the adjustment bolt will be accessible.

another tip: Car off, clutch in, push the shifter to the left...if you then move up to 1st or down
to 2nd, does it go right in or does it have to "move around" a bump first? I adjusted mine this way in the end and it's great. (Thanks Boris)

this is a preferance issue. there is simply no pure "right" or "wrong" way to adjust this shifter.
I kept fiddling because I wasn't sure if I wanted
it to be ultra smooth, or a little notchy.
I decided on a little notchy. This helps me
drive smoother... if it's notchy downshifting,
then I know I didn't rev match pefectly. if
it slides right in, then I rev matched perfectly,
and I can jump off the clutch instead of coming
off the clutch slow. Also, I like my upshifts
a little notchy. To me, a firm feel is a good
thing. Kept going between notchy and smooth though...
just couldn't decide at first.
