Default Question to all the track junkies

Having never been to a track I'm very curious to go sometime this spring. Could someone give me a rundown of what a newbie needs:
1. To do to the car before going.
2. To have there with yourself.
3. To know about the rules, regulations so as not to look like a complete moron ;-)

Is it better to go to a driving school prior to any track events or are there usually "wise men" at the venue to teach the basics?

BTW, I'm in Chicago, so any info about local places will be highly appreciated.
