Default Question: License Plate Light Replacement

After picking up my S4 from the body shop, I noticed that the left license plate light does not function (for those who didn't see my previous post, I had a new liftgate installed).

Before I drive the 30 mins back to the body shop and demand that they fix the problem, I want to make sure it wasn't just a dead lightbulb (it shouldn't be, as both of the lights functioned before I brought it into the shop). The problem is, I don't know how to get to the bulb for replacement. I removed the one screw in the assembly, but can't seem to pry the clear cover off. Looking at the manual, I'm told to "bring my Audi into an authorized service center" for any light replacement. Ugh.

Does anybody have an idea on how to get that cover off? Does it just pop open (I didn't want to crack it trying to pry it off). This is for an S4 Avant, I'm not sure if the S4 Sedan has identical license plate lights or not.

Thanks in advance...

Default Answer: Use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it off.

This only applies to Avants, as Oatzel noted that there are two screws on each side of the light for the sedan (and I verified the difference by checking out my A4 sedan).

To remove the plastic cover on the license plate light:

- Remove the screw holding the cover in place.
- Using a small flathead screwdriver, gently pry the plastic cover off. It works best if you insert the flathead on the side of the cover nearest the center of the license plate.
- The cover has a small plastic tab on the outside edge, so it will swing away when proper pressure is applied (it takes a bit of work, as there is a water-tight plastic seal around the back of the cover to prevent road grime from getting into the light assembly).

For those interested, it of course was not a burnt out light bulb. I now need to take my car back to the body shop and have them check the wiring for the assembly. Sigh.
