i took my car into a brake shop just now. he didn't want to take my money, and looked at it for free. he said my pads were low, and my rotors were worn out.

he also said every time you replace the pads, you need to replace the rotors. explanation - the lip on the rotor was too worn out and they had none to trim.

i didn't buy it, but was nice and said i would let him know when my new pads and "rotors" would come.

BS or no? the rotors do look worn, but they were new last october.

if they are worn, it's best to replace them. Personally, on a German car, I would replace pad and rotor sets together.

His remark about trimming them means he probably compared the existing thickness, subtracted the standard amount that he would cut if he were reusing and resurfacing the rotors, and compared to the minimum spec. Sounds like he was telling your there wasn't enough rotor thickness left to justify keeping the existing rotors. Does not sound like he was BSing you at all, but the only way to tell is the measure the rotor thickness with a micrometer.

I'm having the same dilema...they told me they needed to resurface the rotors for new brake pads

I thought you meant that the large "groove" the pad makes would not fit the new pads.

Also, some pad manufcturers recommend that you bed new pads on used rotors, and new rotors with used pads.

I use my brakes rather aggressively, go thru about 4 sets of pads per rotor in the front, 3 sets of pads per rotor in the rear, have never resurfaced rotors, and never needed to.
