Removed rear Bose speakers, didn't find the "hanging amp." Normal?

Default Removed rear Bose speakers, didn't find the "hanging amp." Normal?
Good morning guys,
Decided on finally replacing my busted Bose speakers on my 01.5. As per Audigurl's Tech article, there should be an amp hanging off of the driver's side rear speaker. Mine did not have one. Did they change is from the 2000 models?

The amp is in the trunk behind the carpet on the left

So what are the little square things on the back of the speakers? I thought those were the amps.
