Default Ribbed belt after timing belt replacement - need help.

Hello all,

I've sucsessfully replaced my timing belt, pulleys, etc.

I had the lock carrier back on, car back together etc and drove it a few times. Alternator light flipped on, and I noticed no charge. I assumed I did something to the alternator.

After inspection I noticed that the ribbed belt came off. It's brand new, and so is the idle tension pulley.

I took the lock carrier back out, popped the ribbed belt back on, started the car with the lock carrier out. I noticed that the ribbed belt seems to be working it's way off at the idle pulley / viscous fan pulley.

I had that pulley out when I replaced the TB. Thinking maybe I didn't have torque correct I removed the four bolts, the assembly - re-inserted and re-torqued.

The belt still seems to coming off at the same pulley.

Does anybody have any ideas? Did I somehow misplace a spacer?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I thought of that.

It's same length as original belt. I bought the kit w/ accesory belt pulleys, etc from ECS.

Checked the bentley manual, and pictures, and a sextant, Ouija board, etc. Everything's routed correctly.

I just took a shower and have been searching the forums. Somebody else mentioned the power steering pump pulley being reversed. That makes some sense. I didn't measure the depth of either side of the pulley - maybe the depth of the pulley hub isn't in the middle.

I'll pull the lock carrier back out and try this.

Any bets on how fast I can get the lock carrier into the service position the 3rd time around??

Default Did you install a pulley backward or something?

Check the pulley to make sure it's in line with the others. It's probably not, and thats most likely why the belt is riding right off the pulley. Don't know that I've ever heard of someone installing the pulley backward (or if it's even possible), but based on what you're saying, that seems like a possibility.

Default Re: I'm a Dumbass.

For anybody else that's interested.

The power steering pulley has a side stamped "FRONT"

That's what I get for trying to do everything at once......

Well, somebody had to do it first (or admit it first). You win the prize.
