"head gasket + oil" you mean your valve cover gasket?! Head gasket = coolant mixing with your oil

if it's failed that way, wouldn't there be a pretty massive vacumn leak as well then?

Default if you think about what the block & head look like

there are coolant & oil passages between the two. So depending on where the leak in the gasket is, it could

(a) dump oil and/or coolant into a cylinder
(b) dump oil and/or coolant outside the block
(c) mix oil & coolant

If the gasket is pretty bad or the head is pulled, then you'll loose compression. I'd think it'd have to be a huge *** leak to cause a "massive vacuum leak". Compression, or lack therof, would likely be a much bigger issue.
