Default Not to beat a dead horse, but i'll throw in my .02

I have the utmost respect for what a (building) architect goes through to get to a position of prominence in his field. i had friends in school pursue this career path through many many long nights and ridiculous workloads, only to follow it on with low-paying internships and work experience before getting to anything to make it all worth it.

That said, I'm not trying to go down the same "holier than thou" route here, just trying to educate some on an otherwise mystifying occupation:

Computer Architecture is not what any of you are making it out to be. it has nothing to do with software programming or computer repair or bill gates. CPU Architecture is the process of planning out the design of a microprocessor. This is not to be confused with the actual design, which is done by Logic and circuit desingers. Architects deal with units (caches, predictors, execution units, sequencers, etc) at a high level, planning everything that needs to be done for the designers to actually carry out the work. Very similar to what a building architect does before passing te design off to the construction company.

If the designers have questions about the scope, implementation, details, etc of the design, they ask the architects. There are 1 or more architects that "own" each cluster, or unit in the CPU, and each is responsible for the succesful completion of that unit, and tying it inot the overall CPU design.

We just finished a project that is, in all reality, probably the most complicated thing ever designed by mankind. Its a processor capable of running at 5 GHz, executing 4 instrucitons per clock cycle, with a ~42 stage pipeline.

So don't think we're taking the title lightly. We're not joe radio-shack tha just grabbed a title out of the book to make ourselves sound important.

Also, that said, if our design fails, somebody gets a wrong number, or their computer stops working. if a buliding architect design fails, well, worse things happen, so I fully agree on the need for certification and lengthy work experience. Its just two different fields.

Nw everyone go buy an intel processor ad drive my stock price up!
