Default shift throw measurements

Just for fun I measured the 3 to 4 distance (at the ****) on the cars I have (Porsche is 2 to 3 because of the racing gate pattern):

S4 4 7/8 inches
911 ('69) 7 1/4
RX7 Turbo 4 1/8
Maxima 4 7/8 (it is a "four door sports car"!)
Miata (V8) 3 1/8 Ford/Warner T5 gearbox

I agree that a shortshifter would tighten up the S4 pattern...as has been cited on this forum. But the stock setup is not bad, just not optimal. As for length of throw, and while there is a shifter kit for the 911, you couldn't ask for a slicker shifting transmission than the old 911 has. Like the proverbial hot knife through warm butter.

Default It's not just distance, arc of throw is a factor

Imagine one shifter that involved moving the shift **** up and over in a 180 degree arc, but only a total of 4 inches, that would be far worse than a shifter that had a long radius such that moving it 7 inches was nearly a flat linear movement.

As I recall, doesn't the old 911 have a really tall shifter compared to the Audi? (Sticking up from the floor instead of up from the center console?)

But I agree that the quality of the transmission feel is probably more important than the distance...<p>...jim, SF Bay Area
