Shifter slop.
I've done some searching on this and come up with some good posts, all of which have pictures that are no longer in existance.
My problem is this:
With the shifter in neutral, I have about 1/2-1" of 'play' with no resistance. Outside of that range, I can feel some resistance.
With the shifter in 3rd or 4th gear, there is same amount of side-to-side movement.
With the shifter in 1st, 2nd, 5th or 6th, I have less, but still noticeable, slop.
I don't have any trouble getting the car into or out of any gears. This extra side-to-side movement is my only complaint.
From my searches, I've read that this can be cured using a $20 ball joint repair kit (which, using a p/n in a post, is <a href="http://www.worldimpex.com/search_by_partno.html?searchmode=partno&partno=8D0 798151&x=44&y=8">this kit</a>).
I'm posting becuase I'd like a bit more information about what exactly I'd be looking at repairing (a picture that actually works would be good) as well as repair proceedures from anyone that may have done this. I've read that this can be done with the transmission still in the car, so that's a good start.
Also, if there is another possible cause to this issue, I'd like to hear that, as well.

I've read that some that have only used the B6 setup still have the slop.
The linkages may be what helps you. Then again, others have used just the B6 setus and eliminated it - but their slop sounded different than what I'm experiencing. I'm hoping I can get away with that repair kit or something as easy as that sounds. Although nothing is ever easy on these cars.

Just suffering - - it's not that bad. I did the B6 conversion thing thinking it would fix....
my problem. When it didn't, I just left the stuff in there as it's a really nice short shifter set-up.
IMO, it's not better than my old B&M - just smoother. The B&M was notchier and shorter, which I actually liked a lot.
I still have it sitting in a drawer, just need to sell it or re-install it and sell the B6 set-up.

For reference... here is the diagram of the repair kit.
