Default Does it really "grind"? 1-2 shift is a little touchy, and getting into 1st is impossible above 5mph-

I hesitate between 1 and 2 and it works real well, takes some getting used to. My technique is to shift using just my fingers basically, and when coming out of first I flick the **** towards 2nd, it sorta bounces out of the gate a tad, then I know I'm good and can continue the shift. It happens fast once you get it down.

2nd. Pausing helps to rev-match. DO NOT force it into gear...

Default 2nd

this is my first manual transmission car and I learned fairly quickly how to drive .. but it took me the longest to master the 1-2 shift. like you said, I almost hesitate for a second before I let the clutch back out to let the RPM's drop and make the shift smooth .. and make sure I push the clutch all the way to the floor before I move the shifter into 2nd.

although its a known fact earlier S4's had 2nd gear syncro problems soooo.. thats possible too. I'm not 100% sure how to diagnose if that could be the problem tho.

are 2nd gear synchro problems really isolated to early S4s?

Default If you cant find'em.. . .Grind'em... .

But seriously make sure your pressing the clutch all the way in and not pulling into gear before the pedal is fully depressed
I sometimes do this samething going into 4th but notice its when im getting lazy w/ the clutch
also it doesn't exactly mean its a synchro problem, it can be the result of a problem somewhere in the clutch....have u checked your hydrolic fluid?

Default I can shift into 1st at over 5 mph. I also have an extra short Tanoga which increases effort.

It's all about proper rev matching.

Default Your 1-2 slider is burred up from grinding into second. You can try shifting from 1st to 2nd over

and over hoping it will loosen up. It will not stop you car from grinding when going into second when you are in a hurry. You need a rebuild. To fix that.
Go to www.stasisengineering.com. Their trannys are priced well.

Default It's a street car, man -

Stop beating the shyte out of it. These cars aren't - in fact no street cars - are designed to take that kind of outright abuse on a regular basis. Not even pure race cars (track racing) are designed for that kind of 1-2 shifting. If you want to continue that kind of driving, get something designed for drag racing. The S4 isn't.
