Default Short shifter question

Are the crop of short shifters out there for the S4 mechanically superior to the stock shifter or are they just shorter. If they are not, what prevents you from getting a machine shop to extend the threading on the stock shifter and lopping off 2 or 3 inches from your stock shifter and saving yourself $280?

Default Short arms?

Short shifters move the pivot point, but the length of the shaft is close to identical to stock.

Quite a few people have just bobbed the stock shifter, though.

Default they are not 'lopped off' shorter they have a shorter throw

They have a different pivot point.....

There is someone modding the stock shifter and it is less than the aftermarket replacement...and some say better too....

Wouldn't shortening the shifter as suggested imply longer arms...LimbusOrangatangus....
