so whats the general opinion on buying used turbos, good idea or bad idea

Haha!! So true. .... If you're going to spend the $$$ to get them put in an all, better to buy them
new, IMO. I have a set of used K03's as a backup, cause I know that my friends and I can swap those suckers in in less than a day if it comes to that.
But if you're paying to have this all done, you should just spend the extra $$$ and do it right.

What is your intent with them? Buy used and install or get rebuilt/modded?
Not a bad idea to buy for cores and get them rebuilt or modded. For me, I bought some used ones that needed rebuilds, and had them p&p'd and clearanced. This made sense to me since I'd have a hard time justifying the mods on brand new BW units. Tearing apart a brand new CHRA and modding things seems like a terrible waste to me, plus its cost prohibitive for a schlep like me.
My cores cost me a G, rebuilds and hot side mods were about another 1100. $2100 for ported/polished/clearanced/rebuilt K04's.

Depends....
If OEM, probably new. If hybrid or otherwise modded, probably used. Why? The person before you had a chance to see if the modded ones were rebuilt properly. Unless the guy was running ungodly amounts of boost then they're probably fine after a few thousand miles.
Now, if you were going to modify the OEM K04s to be hybrid then buying used OEM is certainly the way to go (cheaper and will be rebuilding anyway).
