Default Some StonGard/clear bra questions (no HIG intended)...

I'm interested in keeping my hood 'acne-free', but have a few concerns:

1- Will the paint underneath fade at a different rate than the rest of the car?

2- Which pieces (if bought seperately) are REALLY important, and which are just
for people with OCD?

3- And can I (a reasonably intelligent, read-the-instructions type, but not a mechanic by ANY stretch) install it correctly by myself? Their website seems to imply that it's
brain surgery.......

4- Are there other clear bras out there? Are they better in any way?

Thanks as always!<p>Nogaro/Blue Alcantra 01 S4 (1st day - 9/9/00)

No, paint will not fade underneath.

Mirrors, hood, fender, bumper (most kits come with grill pieces, but they are useless imo

Depends what kind of perfectionist you are. I am, tried a mirror and said 4get it. Took it to installer, and still not perfect. You WILL be able to see it. Trade off on paint abuse.

Not sure if Clear Bra is a trade name, or generic. X-pel has a product

I had Armourfend (a clear bra) applied on my car. They say the paint underneath will not fade at a difference rate, althought they also tell you about the amazing UV-blocking properties. So, if it blocks UV rays, and the exposed paint just soaks them up, what's going to happen? I think the threat of paint chips is much more of a concern.

I'd get atleast the hood, bumper, front fender pieces done. Mirrors are good too.

I watched them install it and recommend having a friend or two help and keep it wet.

As far as other companies, there's Stoneguard, Armourfend (these guys really know what they are doing!), xpel, invincashield and clearmask.com. It's all basically the same 3M material (Scotchcal), and they also sell the stuff in bulk.

Default I installed StonGard myself. Turned out really well but...

It took the better part of 5 hours and was very stressful. I did front bumper, front license cover, popup washers, hood/grill, front fender triangles, mirrors, and under the door handles. I skipped the grills. Too much pain, too little gain.

Mirrors were no problem - lots of stretching though. The front/grill was the toughest. Follow the instructions on the XPEL website and you can do it. You really have to stretch the pieces to get good coverage. Sorta like heavy Saran wrap!
