Default Someone explain to me how the fan clutch works...

I put it back on and start the car and the fan isn't really spinning. The belt is turning the wheel fine, but the fan is only occasionally grabbing and turning much slower or not at all. I take the car for a drive and come back and the fan is turning full speed. Is this normal operation? I thought I had broke it, but now it's turning again?

Dummy version....As the fan gets hot, the "clutch" grabs harder onto the belt drive.

there's a fluid inside the aluminum finned bit that gets thicker when heated=makes it spin faster

Ok, so it's normal for it not to spin when you first start the car?

Default well I think it should spin a little but you should be able to stop it with your hand . . .

check it after it's hot and it should be very difficult to turn while not running . .

Default I would never attempt to stop *any* clutch fan on a car with my HAND!

Ouch!!!

Even if it's "supposed" to stop.... Not worth risking it!!

Default spin it with hand while car is not running. you should be able to feel some resistance

if it feels spinning freely w/o resistance, it's shot.
