Stock M3 vs. Chipped S4

Stock M3 vs. Chipped S4
Just a question, how do they compare? A 99 M3 bone stock against a chipped, but otherwise stock S4?
Two guys I work with have these two cars. I've driven both as well as been passenger with both owners going all out. I don't know what kind of chip the S4 has, but it moves pretty good. But by my seat-of-the-pants o'meter, the M3 feels faster.
Which car would win in a quarter mile race?
There could be big money on this race. I get the impression that the M3 owner is a slightly better driver. What would it take for the S4 to win? Would he have to launch at high rpms and hope that the M3 can't catch up during the quarter? Or would the S4 keep pulling away if it were to get the jump from the start?

Re: Why the hell is the 1/4 a race? Buy a hemi-head 442 and be the "real" champ...
The 1/4 mile is THE standard in the US. Americans only really care about acceleration, while the rest of the world seems more fascinated by top speed.
With the kinds of roads in the US, its no wonder people don't give a crap about top speed here.....

Answers:
1) stock to stock, the cars' test times in US car mags are virtually equal, with the S4 getting a 1/10 sec lead in both cases.
2) chips seem to shave from 0.3-0.5 second off of this time, SOOOO...
3) IF the S4 guy does a good launch, and IF he doesn't tank any shifts, hit the rev limiter, etc., then he should give the M3 a good spanking. When two cars' times are within 1/2 second or so, the driver of the faster car had better not screw up. :-)<p>'00 S4
