Stock S4 beats lightly modded E36 M3
Well, my buddy has a really nice E36 and has a few mods. He's one of those guys who gets all defensive when you say you can smoke his car. Anyway, after the coffee shop yesterday we decided to have a lil run on Capitol Expressway (San Jose). I haven't really practiced my launch yet either (i've had the car for 2 months now). Just an FYI, my car was bone stock (well maybe just an APR bi-pipe and 710n's) since I had it at the dealership earlier that day. I do have another ECU with APR chip btw. Anyhow, first run i totally f@$$ed up the launch so he barely beat me by a less than half a cars length. 2nd run I had a really good launch (didn't really bog it down this time) and beat him by a cars length. It seems like either car can pull on each other and it all depends on the launch. He does have a few mods however; downpipe, air intake, and modded intake manifold.) So I think our cars would smoke em stock to stock and it's not the driver because i'm a newbie stick driver and he's had his car for 3-4 years now. I'm going to run him with the chip..probably pull on him 3-4 cars lengths...who knows. Just thought I'de share

Did he have a chip? Stock for stock, an S4 will pull on an E3 if from a roll...
From a launch, the S4 will obviously benefit even more. However, I wouldn't call it "smoking". By "pull" I mean maybe 1-2 cars 0-60mph from a dig but only 1 car from a roll.
As I've posted earlier, a friend's E36 (3.0L) with Dinan chip, exhaust, intake (~260hp) is roughly even from a roll with my S4 when I'm in stock form plus 3" exhaust. If you back off his mods (minus 20hp) then you can see why the S4 would get the 1-2 cars.
Aside from straight away speed, though, the M3 shines. Those brakes are insane.
