Default strange problems...

So yesterday, I was driving on the highway, I was going about 50 and I downshifted into what I thought was third, the car jolted and the car started acting funny, I lost any acceleration power, it was as if the car was running out of gas, since the gas light was on, I figured I ran out of gas. I lost power very slowly, I pulled the car off to the side of the road and tried to start it back up. No luck. So I am out of gas, right. Except, a minute or so later, I turned off the A/C and then my car started. Very confused I started to drive and about a half a mile down the road the car faltered and I pulled off the road again. But the car didn't die and I pulled off, drove to the gas station, and I was fine. I put in 14.1 gallons which would mean I was 2 gallons away from totally empty. It was a brutally hot day(95-100F), but I wasn't driving too aggressively. Any ideas of what happened? -ben!

Default You may have had vapor lock.

If all seems fine now, and you could check codes to see if you had any fuel delivery related codes.

Default an s4 with carbs? hmmm... oh you mean gas tank vapor lock (check your gas cap OP) :-D

or you may have also just got to some bad gas at the bottom of your tank. next time you are near empty, siphon some off and have it analyzed if you are **** like the rest of us. :-)

Default Yes, tank vapor lock. Happened to my '93 CSQ.

S4 with a carb... NASCAR look out!

Wow, last time I touched a carb (other than on a kart) had to be, 1989 or so.

Default This is a known bug on a lot of cars...

I've had this happen with a C5 Corvette and a Buick at one point.... and I think even in the A8. Essentially when you filled the gas tank it was a different temperature and pressure than what's outside. And today it was ueber-hot, at least according to your post. So that difference in pressure essentially causes vapor lock in the gas tank. Although I haven't heard of it cutting fuel off the tank will report a bogus amount of gas; I had a full tank in the 'vette and it reported bingo on the dash. That's not good. The trick is to open up the gas cap, releave and equalize the pressure, and then keep driving.
