test drove a 2004 GT3, 2004 911tt and a Audi Q7 4.2 today...
- first the 911tt had an after market exhaust and the resonating sound that was created was that high pitch sound they use to get rid of mice (both me and the salesman couldn't wait to get out of the car)
Impressions
(911tt)
- the 911tt reminds you of a stage 3 S4 but has less power, better seats, the clutch is way softer than my spec #2
- the suspension is soft
- the car needs a chip and a set of ohlins
(GT3)
- the suspension is way softer than I thought it would be - way softer
- the shifter takes some getting use to - the throws are so short it is unbelievable
- the 2004 has no ABS or PSM - sales guy was cool and I really wanted to test out the brakes - I locked them up almost immediately and likely mini flat spotted the tire
- the car needs a little more power - the new model comes with another 40hp so it should be better
- back to the suspension, the new model comes with active suspension (soft and hard setting) I think this should really make the car better - otherwise the car definitely needs some Ohlins
Also, the Aero package on the new 911s looks fantastic - BUT - even the one in the dealer's showroom had badly scrapped the front lower fascia (I can't imagine this lasting in the real world)
Q7
- very average
- the 4.2 at 350hp has a real lack of grunt
- also felt the interior was a little below audi's standards
Also sat in
S6
- the best seats (recaros) I have ever sat in - ever
- inside of the car is probably audi's best
- front and rear fascia are good but the car needs more squat / wheel arches (like the new RS4) from the side view
S10
- if I had a 5 car garage, would make a very nice car to take the wife out on a Saturday night
RS4
- perfect interior
- believe it or not, the recaros on the S6 are a slightly different style and much better
I did these test drives today as I am looking / thinking about my next car. I also went to a chevy dealer that sells a lot of vettes and the salesman said it would take almost a year to get a z06??? - they get 2 a month and have 20+ on the waiting list. They did have one on the lot that the guy was picking up tomorrow. I sat in it. Interior clearly not up to audi standards but I was told, and thus was expecting the car's hood to make it feel like you are in a big car. I didn't get this feeling at all and while the 911s felt a little smaller my first impression was favorable from a driver's position point of view - I seriously wanted to drive one but 1 year??? If I was GM I would crank up the volume asap.
Place your vote for value / second car.
1) $80,000 used 911tt + suspension + chip / exhaust = $90,000
2) $110,000 for new 911gt3
3) Z06

Hmmm...
The GT3 *should* have working ABS. It is much more aggressive than what we have in the S4. So you will often hear squealing tyres and have limited directional control with it on. I like it that way. :-)
Remember that the super-hard suspension we have is a response to the heavy front weight bias. But a super-stiff suspension isn't really ideal as it has an effect on the tyre's contact with the road. The suspension is softer on the GT3 and Turbo because it can be.

GT3 would be a better 2nd car, sportier and great compliment to S4 IMO.
I'm surprised that you thought the 996TT was slow and had a soft suspension. I guess my S4 is slow and has a crappy suspension compared to yours.
