I could have sworn that the max tire pressure as written on the tire itself is 40psi

that could be true... these are Audi's "Recommended" inflation levels...

You shouldn't set pressure to max...use Audi recommended pressure

Actually your pressure levels should be 36 front, 34 rear...

My bad, 42 psi if I am carrying 5 stick figures and 3 boxes...
