Instead of selling it here in the states, send the car back! I was just fooling around on www.autoscout.de
With relative ease I could find a buyer of my 2000 S4 for around 25000 euros give or take a few bucks. With the exchange rate being what it is, 25k euros translates to about 31.5k USD!
I have no clue what shipping costs are but if the exchange rate continue to nose dive the way thats its been this could really be a good deal!
Just some food for thought....

Cant imagine they would slap a used car that hard with taxes
True but why do they get the fun cars like Rs4's? Can't imagine that car gets better fuel econ then ours!

hell yeah, especially if you're NOT a returning resident...
Trust me, walked that thought many times, and I am an EU citizen, I can bring vehicle TAX FREE into Europe, where for instance, an S4 with my milage (31.6K) and MY (2000) will bring in at least $46K, YES, that's dollars....
Maybe, at some point, if we're moving back to Europe. we'll walking that path.....
btw, if you want to ship, just BUY your own container, much cheaper than arringing one, plus, you can take your time in securing your load....

xdollars X what the dollar is woth there (should be 1$=1Euro, but now it's 1.26$=1E)
so 10E=12.6$... dollar is cheap there.
so instead of selling the car here for 30K$ sell there for 30K euros ...30k euros is like 37800$(exchanged in europe right after the deal).. sweet aa.. sounds good..

don't forget taxes......import taxes that is...
Dunno about Germany precisely, however, on ANY new and imported car in the Netherlands, a 28% tax is charged, which has to be paid by the buyer.....this tax is waived for expats (coming to Netherlands for couple of years) or EU citizens, whom have to have owned vehicle for more than 9 mo's prior to the import and keep the vehicle for more than 6 mo's when arriving in the country. If sold within 6 mo's, partial import duty will be collected..
(yeah, I researched this extensively, see my previous post, I could EASILY make $25K if we'd moved back today..)
