Default thought I should post this here as well as the B6 A4 forum....

I sort of have an interesting question. Who of you have a 1.8t 2002-2005 B6 A4 Tiptronic and are running/using the APR k04 Turbo Kit? Please elaborate on how you do or do not like it in regards to my message below.

\/\/\/\/\/ Please read below before replying \/\/\/\/\/

The reason why I asked this question is because I want to know how this set up compares to a stock B5 S4 Tiptronic. So, if you have experience with both of these cars please chime in.

My wife and I just sold her '98 2.8L B5 A4 Avant manual transmission and bought her an `02 B5 S4 tiptronic. She loves the power and the fact that it is an automatic/tiptronic, yet every time she sees a B6 A4 Avant she goes on and on about how wonderful they look and how she really wants one. Well, we are reluctant to get one for her because the automatics are so slow. (that is why we got the S4 in the first place) So, I think I would be willing to get a B6 A4 auto/tip if we could make it as fast as the B5 S4. I realize that "fast" is all relative... I'm talking about being at a light that is green, waiting for a break in traffic to turn left and having the power all right there to go when she steps on it. She doesn't feel confident in the A4 auto/tips in the situation that I just mentioned. (I think it's because of the turbo lag) Will this APR k04 set up for the B6 A4 have more turbo lag than the stock B5 S4?

On paper the HP numbers are about the same:

B5 S4, stock = 250 HP
B6 A4, w/APR k04 set up = 247 HP

It seem like the GIAC FX,K04 HP #'s are about the same. Please advise.

We love the power and drive of the S4 but I'm constantly worried about any and every little noise. (turbo failure mostly)

Sorry this is sort of long and thanks for your help

Default My 2 cents...

I cannot speak to the power delivery of a chipped A4, but a chipped S4--even my buttery smooth MTM--is not as smooth as stock programming.

Therefore, the stock S4 will be smoother driving than a chipped A4. But if you really want to push it over, get a chip for the S4 and the extra 100pound/ft of torque and 60hp will sway her.

A chipped Tip S4 is a great daily driver.

But driving a car that is not good looking is no fun at all. If she really wants a B6, then no B5 will suffice.

Default Not a direct answer to your question, but I do have some experience with..................

a (B5) '01 A4 1.8t with tip <same engine as the '02 (B6)>.
My wife's A4 is set up with the apr 93 program, borla turbo back exhaust and the 710N bpv.
This combination has greatly improved the overall driveabilty of the car with one exception. It will exasperate the transmission "hunting".
When accelerating at 3/4 throttle, the car really feels quick. But beware, it is not the equal of a stock B5 S4 tip.
If your wife really prefers the B6 and wants the instant off the line power, get her a B6 S4. The V8 should provide the down low torque she wants.

Default You should find out what the torque limitation is for a B6 A4 tiptronic transmission before looking

at the K04 setup. the B5 S4 limit is published to be 300 lb/ft according to ZF, but many people have been running Stage II+ tips for years w/o issues and that is close to 400 lb/ft torque.

My turbo lag is very minimal if not altogether non-existent w/ Sportec code and stock code. Other tuning programs have their own personality. When I was using APR 5.0 and MTM Gen II, it was more jumpy. I would bet that a single turbo setup in the B6 A4 would only exasperate the turbo lag effect.

IMO, I think the B6 sedan looks too fat. However, I like the B6/B6 Avant look much, much more than the B5 Avant (with the exception of the B5 RS4). Doesn't matter, the look is a personal preference.

And a stock B5 S4 is slow these days. A Honda Accord Hybrid is running about the same HP. The 2002 Acura TL Type S is running 265 HP, and with a Comptech Supercharger and transmission cooler will run over 300 HP (just don't turn when flooring it).

Why not get a B6 3.0L? No turbo lag, enough power, probably.
