I was thinking about getting a radio transmitter hooked-up to an mp3 player in the armrest, but I've heard bad things about the FM quality of available transmitters.

So what I'd like to do instead is connect a small mp3 player that I could leave in the ashtray (and wouldn't be visible). I'm guessing I need to pull a 3.5mm stereo jack from the head unit into the ashtray. But I'm a total electronics n00b, and I'm just guessing here...

Anyone done this? Any advice?

It's a 20GB used one with everything for $170. Is that a good deal?

Also, how is the install? Easy? Hard? Does it replace the disc changer (I'm fine with that, but want to know)?

Finally, does it display mp3 track/title information on the OEM CD display?

Install is easy if your car is already pre-wired for the 6 disc CD changer. I placed my phatbox in place of the CD changer - completely stealth install. It does replace the CD changer. You can find tech articles on installing the phatbox in AudiWorld's tech articles.

It does NOT display the ID3 tags in the CD display - it uses text to speech. I actually like it better than the traditional display.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1255425.phtml">One of a few writeups on installing Phatnoise</a></li></ul>
