Default Tires for the track

I'm running HPDEs with Nasa (currently in HPDE-3), plus a few with the the Audi Club and Norcal Racing club. My car is a 2001 stage3 S4 with Ohlins with 700/800 springs, Brembo 355mm BBK, and Neuspeed rear sway on stiff. So far, I've done 24 days on the track (mostly Infineon and Thunderhill) and the tires (Goodyear F1 GS-D3 in size 245/35-18 on BBS CH 18x8.5" rims) are worn on the outer edges with the metal belt showing thru in one place, so I'm going to replace the tires. I'm leaning toward the Nitto NT01, but they come in 235/40-18, but not in 245/35-18. I know that the 235/40 tire is slightly taller, plus not as wide. Will the NT01 tire work OK in a 235/40-18 size? Would it rub at high speeds? (my fenders are rolled). Right now, the ride height is approx 24.75" front and 25" rear with the 245/35-18 tires. Will the NT01's grip quite a bit better even though their width is slightly less? I may end up getting a full race car fairly soon, but would still like to take the S4 out occasionally and let it run. I had read that it was not a good idea to run on R compounds if you are just learning to drive on the track, but hopefully, I've learned enough, and will just be a little careful the first few times out. Thanks!!! - Jim (Calif_Kid)

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r271/Calif_Kid/_HOP2016.jpg</a

Default Re: alignment

I'll try to find the paperwork from the alignment, but it was set to a 'aggressive street' setting. The wear is really pretty uniform across the tires, so it isn't like there is just too much positive camber. The tires still have a pretty good amount of tread left - say 4/32-6/32 - but the inside and outside edges are just somewhat worn with some metal cord showing thru in one small spot. I usually run around 39-40 psig hot in the front, and around 41-42 in the rear, and the settings seem to work well. I haven't tried taking any tire temperature readings though. Could the extra wear on the inside and outside edges be just from the high speed cornering and is normal/expected? I need to get a few things checked at the shop, so I'll probably ask there also, and maybe see about getting the alignment rechecked. The main question though, is would the 235/40-18 Nitto NT01 tires work well (as they are slightly taller and not quite as wide as the 245/35-18 Goodyears)? - Jim (Calif_Kid)

Nittos run a bit wide and have a much stiffer sidewall than GSD3's. Run them. You will be happy.

Default Why do you run those pressure settings? I've usually run about 38psi cold all around

which seems to be the right pressure to let them just lean onto the sidewall. I'd imagine that with the low hot pressures you are are running that it could potentially be increasing the wear at the edges of the tread. I would expect to see slightly more wear across the edges of the tires after a few driving events. The fact that you have cords showing seems a bit excessive.

How did you arrive at those hot pressures? Have you marked the sidewall to see how much you are rolling over?

Default well, your 38 cold on the street may only see his 40-ish hot on the street. you need to drop

to lower cold temps (probably down to 32 range) to have 38-42 hot range on the track. normal/good hot track temps, imo.

Default it should be fine. it's not that much of a difference, and you are on the low side that you could

raise the car a little if it rubs...more than just your plastic liner.

Default My 38 cold temp worked well for me on the TRACK. After my sessions I would check how my tires...

were scrubbing, and I didn't notice a need for adjustment.

Default 2nd - research on the tire co. themselves and see if they run wide or narrow....

e.g. Toyo's are notoriously narrow for their claimed size...

so best case for you is Nittos indeed run wide and their claimed 235 is just as wide as your GY's 245.

Have fun at the track and don't lift!

Default all depends on the tires, alignment, track, driver, etc.

I run around 29F/32R psi cold with my RT615 and find they'll be in the 38/40 psi range hot... and that's the best spot for me.

have you checked the hot temps from starting at 38 cold?
