Track/Car Report -- AWE RSK04 car at Laguna Seca (Quattro Club 2-day event)
Welp, here's a mini write-up of my Laguna Seca experience this past Wed and Thurs (30th and 31st).
Current car specs:
* 2000 Santorin Blue S4, 01/00 build
* AWE RSK04 kit:
* RS4 K04 turbos
* Custom AWE MAF housing
* Custom Injector size
* AWE/McNeil Exhaust Manifold
* AWE Lightweight flywheel
* JP Engineering downpipes
* UUC VM3 exhaust
* StopTech 332mm front brakes
* Pagid orange pads up front
* Porterfield R4S pads on the back (stock calipers and rotors)
* H&R "Ultra" coilovers
* APR bi-pipe
* MTM F-pipe
* Forge BPVs
* RS4 Intercoolers
* RS4 Oil Cooler [running Redline 5w30]
* SSR Competition track wheel
* 17x8.5
* 225/45R17 Kumho Ecsta V700 R-compound tires
The track:
* "Mazda Raceway" at Laguna Seca
* Clear weather:
* Morning = low 50's
* Afternoon = low 60's
* More track info
The fun...
Basically - there wasn't a single car in my run group (mixed advanced and instructors) that I didn't pass (assuming it was in front of me already). Ok, there was one exception - a Boxster S that was being piloted by a real race car driver (races Porsche Cup Cars) - but that was during my first session where I was still warming up, and getting familiar with the track again (he races the track all the time .
There was S4s, TTs, and A4s of various tuning, UrS4s that were tuned, a couple 4000TQ's that were tuned (and a race-prepped one, too), and even Dean's "RS2" (90 coupe w/ RS2 bits) taht I ended up passing.
I gave Paul Lambert a ride, and he was thoroughly impressed. :-)
I also gave Chris Leal (Tricked out UrS4, and SVT Lightning - which he was driving on the track that day ) a ride, and he was utterly impressed with the smooth power delivery from even the low revs and how hard it pulled up top even.
He insisted I give Brian Bilotti (really tricked out UrS4) a ride, so I did... Brian was utterly impressed as well ;-)
So, here are some tidbits of info:
* No DTCs at all - and I was checking after my sessions.
* Oil temps never broke about 240 or so (needle was to the left of the '250' mark a bit). Most of the other S4 drivers I talked to said their oil temps peaked anywhere from 250-275 (that they noticed).
* I was lifting my inside rear wheel and spinning it up, coming out of T11 (time for an LSD? ;-)
* Had to putt up the T5-T6 hill since I was over the 90dB sound limit (shifted to 5th and just putted up at ~75)
* I could accelerate all the way up the T6-T7 hill, and was hitting about 105 or so by the time I was lifting to start braking for the corckscrew. I talked to other drivers, and I dont' think anyone was over 100 (or even 95, that I recall)... of course, I didn't talk to everyone
Issues:
The only thing that caused any sort of "issues" was the part throttle fluctuation of power... that is, when at 1/4-1/3 throttle power (and boost, as it's obvious by watching the gauge) would fluctuate on about a 1-second cycle up-down-up-down-... Boost fluctuated about .1-.2bar during this time. This is really only a problem in turns -- then again, it's rather troublesome when trying to keep an even throttle thru a turn...
Aside from that, the only other thing is that I'm running a bit on the rich side - I get a decent amount of backfiring (and I'm talking real shotgun-sounding backfire -- not burbling . AWE/Garrett think they have a solution for this, tho, so I'll be trying a new program soon.
Bottom line:
Amazing fun
I would definately do it again
An interesting side note, tho: I think I"m actually getting BETTER gas milage now... not sure how or why, tho!

You should hear my car at this altitude....
Even with the stock injectors it sounds like a pack of M-80's going off in my exhaust pipe, and on race fuel.... Oh man. Flames galore.

mpg is around 20-21 for the most part..
I think the computer is really confused tho...
it read 540 miles until empty when I was cruising at about 70 for a while... LOL

Impressed...
...especially considering you were on skinny 225's. Any Z06's or 911 Turbos that were driven well that you could pass?
And regarding your gas mileage, at least on the street, better gas mileage with K04's wouldn't surprise me because you can't suck down as much fuel at 1500-2500rpm with K04's as you can with K03's.

The only vettes were in the beginner group :-(
as was the 996tt...
I wanted to go out in the other instructor group, since there was the Andial porsche and a nice 993 Turbo S, along with some other ballsy cars...
Unfortuantely, I wasn't able to :-(
next time, I hope

Lap times...
would be all wrong, since I was basically coasting up T5-T6 :-(
In fact, I totally forgot to get any times -- I suck :-(
As for the main straight.. I was being pretty conservative, so I usually only hit about 110 by the time I crested the hill, and I'd let off and coast and then brake...
one time I stayed in it up to about 120-125 and scared myself, so I didn't do that again ;-)
