Default tranny

i was wondering how do u tell if a manual tranny needs synchros or needs rebuilding? cuz right now, i find it hard to go into second gear when the car is moving (ie downshifting), but when the car comes to a stop or at low mph, it shifts normally, i was wondering if theres something wrong w/ the tranny or if its like a safety feature, like not being able to shift into first about certain speed? thanx... btw, the car has about 26200 miles on it... thanx

Default Does it shift up, from 1st to second, OK?

When you downshift to 2nd, how far off is the engine RPM, that is are you downshifting from 3rd to second, and if so, at what speed? Any grinding?

If it feels much different now, than earlier in it's life, then you are probably wearing the syncros. But 26k is pretty young for that.

theres no grinding... and it not exactly a downshift, it's just when im rolling to a stop, and putting it into second just get ready to go again... or going into a turn, i would clutch into the turn and put the car into second, the rpm is pretty low... and speed is prolly around 15mph?

i bought the car used, so im hoping that it was not abused and

Default Hard to say for sure, but it doesn't sound bad.

What gear are you in before you shift to 2nd? If you are shifting from a high gear directly down to second, it will take an "instant or 2" longer to sync.

Also, when fully stopped, all VW/Audi transmissions can be hard to get into 1st, sometime you have to shift to 2nd then first to get the gears to line up (or double clutch), since nothing is spinning the gears.
