Default Do you have CATs with those APR DPs?

that'd cause you to fail smog check.

or did you fail based on physical inspection?

Any aftermarket exhaust can cause a fail - depending on if they are busting oyur nutz

bouht car w/ the pipes i know they are apr and the cats that i can see visable w/ my eyes are REALLY small so i guess yea they have but the smell that comes from my car when idle is like my friends firebird when he had no cats.

Default IIRC, the "test" pipes are straight - so you must have cats.

I'm not sure how many CEL they are, so you might want to search to find out if anyone else is failing emissions with the APR DPs.

Default in theory, they should....the next question is

1) Was the car NICE AND WARMED UP? if it was cold, those race cats might not cut it
2) have you had any CEL as a result of running those DPs?
3) considered any other problems?

Default Do these look like what you have?

<img src="http://www.ecstuning.com/audi%20mania/00s4downpipe%201.JPG">

These are the old APR downpipes. The cats are shown at the top and bottom in this image. From your description of "REALLY small" cats, it almost sounds like your confusing the flex joint with a cat. The test pipes are shown in this image directly inline with the downpipes.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/s4/msgs/1232514.phtml">Mark P's APR downpipe post</a></li></ul>

Default CEL = Check Engine Light (and a code that would indicate...

the CATs aren't doing their job)

Ask K04Madness what that code is....he runs test pipes and gets CEL all the time.
