VIRGINIA CITY -- Two people riding in a high-performance race car were killed in a crash during an annual car race near here Saturday.
Storey County sheriff's deputies said driver Patrick Michael Jemison, 42, of Incline Village, and passenger Virginia Lynn Davis, 43, of Show Low, Ariz., were pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputy John Tyson said the accident occurred on State Route 341 during a time-trial run of the Audi Car Club Hill Climb Race.
A preliminary investigation shows the driver went into a curve too fast and lost control of his Dodge Viper. The vehicle slid off the roadway and fell about 250 feet down a ravine.
The race course on State Route 341 stretches for about seven miles between Virginia City and Silver City. The highway serves as the truck route between the two 19th-century mining boom towns located about 30 miles southeast of Reno.
The event is sanctioned by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The accident is under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Yeah RR, I missed that part of the equation. Four Vipers showed up
last year for Devek's track day which is a Porsche 928 event. The thing everyone remembers about that were the Viper owners spinning their cars REPEATEDLY. Now put those badboys on a hill climb sans safety crews and yeah you're lookin at bad mix.
Personally save for the track I've never seen Vipers mixing it up with anyone and all the drivers I've ever spoken to..even young and stupid ones...had a healthy margin of respect bordering on fear in regards to the vehicles.

Safety crews wouldn't have helped.
They were both dead by the time the car came to a stop at the bottom of the ravine. The safety equipment available at the course not the problem.
