P5 is great but underpowered. Shoot for nearly new WRX.

Default Jetta wagon TDI! :) 45-50mpg.

Very hard to find and resale is really high, they're a pretty hot commodity, as not too many are brought in and they're a bit of a niche car. Chippable to run about mid 15s. (1.9l), lots of torque. Timing belt change 100k. Diesel is cheaper in and of itself. Etc, etc.

Default Yup, although you can get nearly as much room in a GTI if you want German fit and finish.

For $22k, you have a reasonable chance of finding one new. Used WRX prices, at least in this area, are worse than an S4. I've seen two year old automatics going for $12k (ie, half the value in two years).

New Mazda. Likely to be less maint than anything Euro. Maybe a used Subaru?
