Have you had problems? I don't have a front plate (NY plates) and have never had a problem.

I currently have a front license plate, thinking of taking it off for a cleaner look.

Default I've been running mine w/o a front plate (TX registered) without problems.
Save your old piece, though, in case either of us gets pulled over and is 'required' to put the plate back on. I'd want to borrow it to show the cop/judge...
