Default vw tool, anybody used it on the s4??? i cant get it to work...
it is giving me an error message "cant establish the communication with the car"...

any clues except bad cables...

Default Could be the laptop you are using.
I have a nice Tohiba Portege laptop at work that won't talk to the VAG emulator cable. I was thinking bad cable myself, but then I used an old klunker 486 laptop someone gave me years ago and *poof*, it works fine.

Something to do with timing on the RS-232 port. I heard the interface is quite tricky (the audi interface, not the serial port) even though its only four wires.

Compaq Presario 1200 series will not work. Bad serial port design.

Default Mine works fine...
make sure you have the correct com-port selected and like jace said it could be the cable, computer or the connector.

Default I had to disable all power mgmt on my compaq to establish a connection--messes w/ serial port
