what is the best tire for a comfortable ride, but also great when speeding?.

No offense, but AVS Intermediates are late 80's technology! Try SP 9000's or R730's
Call tireack and tell them what you want! They'll send you in the right direction.
Also, I'd try the new Yokohama DB's, if available in the right size.

So is most of the rest of your car
The turbos and quattro system are from the 70's. 5-valve heads, drive-by-wire throttle, ABS, EDL, airbags, climate control, CD player, etc. are all from the late 80's.
Intermediates are still the best tire for the money. Other tires are great, but not 3x as good.

Michelins are the most comfortable in my experience
but I can't stand them from a performance perspective. The Pole Positions are probably the best all-round tire money no object, but I haven't heard much about them in snow. The SP9000 and AVS Sports are a level or so below the pole positions and less money, very good tires.
I really only got into performance tires after I left the NE. I am also the type that would have summer tires and winter tires up there. I am not the best person to ask about year-round tires in those conditions. Tirerack has some excellent information on their site, go check it out.

Actually, Tire Rack recommended the RE71's over the AVS Int's
I was buying a track tire for my M5 and narrowed it to those two. They recommended the Bridgestones. Who knows if I can tell the difference but the RE71's are pretty damn sticky. Another thing to remember, much of todays technology is ride/noise vs. stick. A soft tire sticks and the RE71's and AVS Int's are pretty soft which is why they last 12k miles.

Michelin Pilots...
I have the Pilot Sports on the car now and love them. I used to have the MXX3's and loved those as well, although I have to admit the Pilot Sports do better on wet streets. I've also had Pilot XGT Z4's, but not on the S4, and I liked those as well.
On other various sports cars I've gone with Pirelli, Nitto, and Dunlop. I like the Michelin Pilot series of tires the most though.

I second that (more)
I switched from the Pilot XGT Z4's, a great all-season tire for the S4, to Pilot Sports for spring, summer, and fall. They are fantastic tires.<p><a href="mailto:jim@vipmail.com?Subject=AudiWorld Post">Jim</a>, <a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=3894">'00 S4</a>
