What are the causes of failed CV boots? Do they tear with stock suspension as well as after-market?

Default yes. wear item.

exacerbated by weather conditions and the amount of time you spend @ full lock...

also CAN be exacerbated by larger deflection angles if you have a VERY extreme suspension drop.

not really a wear item. Most get damaged by road debris and then tear.

Default possibly but i don't think its that much of a factor, they are filled with grease . . .

the three i've had go on me . . . all the rubber has looked fairly fresh.

Nah, they are made of cheap rubber. Rubber cracks over time.

Default Mine cracked with age and flexing.

Audi calls for them to be checked during the service. So obviously they consider them a normal replacement item.

They all seem to be going around the same time even though we have very different total miles. So it looks like it has more to do with the passage of time than mileage.

Default Driver's side went on mine recently, checked the other side, and it was starting to crack.

Seems to crack at the lower vallies of the accordian. The upper parts didn't show any cracks.
