What do u guys use for chains in the snow? Am i gonna need chains if i go to the snow?

I've driven in some deep snow with M+S and the CHP stop in Bishop didn't ask for to see chains.
The conditions felt like R3.
Although that was in my A4 with sport suspension and 16 in wheels. I'd much prefer at least 17s, not the 18s I have now in snow.
