What exactly is "dampening"? (noob)

So I'm looking to get the Stasis Street Sports and from searching the archives, I've read that they're height adjustable, however they need to be disassembled in order to adjust the dampening. So what is damening? Sorry if it's a stupid question.

If you don't know then you shouldn't be getting the Stasis. First car?

Dampening is what causes anything that is oscilating (the spring) to stop oscilating.

The greater the dampening force, the quicker it will stop oscilating.

A perfect spring with no damping force will oscilate for ever...

IIRC, it should be damping not dampening (at least for sportbikes)
