What exactly is "sidestepping the clutch" and when would one want to do it ?

Okay, here's what it means....
Side stepping the clutch means pushing it to the floor, and letting your left foot slip off of it to the side (normally between the clutch and the brake pedal, or under the brake pedal), and letting the clutch pop up uncontrollably.
Now, when do you want to use it. I never do it as I think that it puts unnecessary stress on the transmission, clutch, or other. My thinking is that if you've reved the car up to a high RPM (3k or so), and let the clutch out quickly like that, something has to give. If the wheels don't spin (which with Quattro they usually don't) something else is stressed to absorb the sudden torque. It's a stronger way of "dumping" the clutch, which just means lifting your foot up as quickly as you can.

there's nothing fancy about it.
Just removing your foot from the pedal so it slaps up... I've never done it in this car.
I gather that if the clutch didn't spin, and roast to all hell, that a halfshaft would probably check out.

About the same.
However, I make damn sure that I'm revving the pissnuts out of it right before I give it the clutch. That way I'm already making boost, and don't have to worry about the car bogging down.
I usually give the motor the clutch anywhere from 4.5 to 5.5 revs. I find those rpm's to work pretty damn good for me.
