what the hell is a stage2 kit for a 1.8
my friend said he just got a stage 2 turbo kit for his 2002 1.8t; i thought stage 2 was the chip.
He said that now he is pushing 280hp. i think they gave him a stock turbo and chipped his car , you?

Generally...
Usually it's similar to what has been conventionally accepted staging for our cars. With the 1.8 cars, it's only a little different:
Stage 1 is a chip or software reflash.
Stage 2 is chip and exhaust, (with or w/o test pipe and downpipe).
Stage 3 is a big turbo and exhaust manifold kit, with fueling.
Stage II+ would logically be a bolt on K04 arrangement, though I haven't heard it called that.
If your friend has a typical "Stage II" 1.8T, he's not making 280 horsepower. He may be making as much as 210, so. It takes a big turbo such as a GT-28, T-28, or GT-28RS-R ("disco potato") to get up near, (and beyond), 300 horsepower in a 1.8T.
It's important to note that stage classifications are arbitrary. While the stuff above is "conventional", there's no rule. Tuners can create their own "stages". AMS, for example, refers to thier standard B5 S4 K04 kit as "Stage V" while the equivalent modifications are considered Stage III, by most. OC.t seems to have a system which is completely off the wall, too.
