What is the life span (mileage) on an aftermarket exhaust system?
I'm looking into buying a used exhaust system.
Borla G1 or APR 3"
the APR one has 25k mileage on it. Just wondering how long these will last before they require replacement. Also from your past experience, do used exhaust systems give you any performance "feel" increases when you first install them from stock?

Disagreement here...
The pipes may outlast the car...put the material in the muffler itself will wear out. Depends on the muffler. It also depends of if you back up the car trailer into your tips and bend the crap out of them....and have to bend and reweld several places. Ugh.

perf gains with a catback exhaust will be minimal.
AWE has some dyno charts that should shed some light on the issue. Look under their aftermarket exhaust options for the B5 S4.

http://www.awe-tuning.com</a

Well...
Most stainless steel exhaust manufacturers will stand behind their full system if anything goes wrong with it, even if it is in the muffler.
Anyway, thought this pic was appropriate:

Keep in mind that not all of the exhaust system may be stainless steel.
They're made in sections, and sometimes only the rear-most section with the cat and tip is stainless. Stainless lasts a long time even exposed to salt, but the exhaust system itself can be damaged by road objects since it's just hanging there under the car.
You'll need to replace the gaskets that mate to the flanges separating the different sections every now and then.

No such thing as lifetime. Even type 316 stainless rusts in Hawaii because of the salt in the air.
It will usually take a type 316 stainless steel outdoor enclosure about 15-20 yrs to rust through in this environment. Most exhausts are made from 304 which is not as corrosion resistant as 316 so they would probably rust out faster (maybe about 10 years or so).
