America's finest city...
I'm an East Coast transplant who's been out here for about 10 years now... initially took some getting used to the slower pace, but I changed my lifestyle to a more outdoor mode and now I can't think of a better place to live.
Drawback is the low pay scale compared to the cost of living... houses are ridiculously expensive out here these days. It took me a while to find a good job here.
Good luck with the move!

SD is really several distinctly different areas - all of which are terrific and many of which are very expensive.
Median house prices throughout SD hover over $350k. Coastal areas closer to $500k as a starting point, inland communities starting at around $275k. Not cute.
The coastal areas are the nicest but priciest. Inland is much more affordable (relative term of course) but considerably warmer (although coming from Florida, that might be moot). Most of the growth in recent years is north of the city. Traffic is nowhere near as bad as LA, DC or the bay area (yet)...but the main arteries are busy at rush hour. Typical commute is 30-40 minutes.
SD has several great universities, a decent technology sector (hurting at the moment) and an emerging bio-tech industry (UCSD spin-offs). But the biggest industry is tourism. SD is not a big headquarter town, so there is not an abundance of corporate type jobs. Engineers to well here.
Hope that helps a little.

I think IT guys do pretty well everywhere...
even here... seems like there's always a pretty good demand for guys like you
I work in Mass Media and it's upsetting to find out that my OC and LA counter parts sometimes make TWICE as much as we do down here.
Still, most of us that live in SD find that it's well worth being here when you consider all the factors
