You very well may be right. I don't perceive any downshifts in dynamic mode to be a "thud" (in the 4800 miles I've driven the car).
It's been a long time since I've driven an S4 DSG (Jan 2010), but my recollection is that it downshifted the same as my S6. Maybe you just got an extraordinarily smooth S4
