New stem seals or used engine?
Not sure where to go with this car that I've been slowly working on.
Car upon start up (after sitting) there's enough smoke to hide my wife's car in the mirror... sometimes... and others it's fine. The valve stem seals need to be done but at 301,000 km... not sure if it's worth my while?
any advice? New stem seals or shop around for a used engine? Can't seem to find a shop that doesn't want to pull the heads.

With that much mileage on the engine, I suspect that you'd be getting into a few valves & guides too. Then, it'd be change this seal & that. Maybe do the water pump & thermostat while you're there. Finally, how about the tensioners & maybe the chains.
All of a sudden, another engine looks pretty quick & dirty.
Your choice, sir.

If you consider to replace engine, I assume you plan to keep this wonderful car for much longer. Otherwise simply topping of oil is an option

I have done a block test to see if theres a head gasket problem... came back negative. At idle, the car stays to temperature and doesnt overheat. It had been sitting for 9 months so I threw some of that eurotech oil cleaner as means to clean out any gunk on the rings. Replaced the breather for kicks and thats about it.
I am going to plate it and see if a jaunt up and down the high way might clear some gunk build up.
