Default Synthetic Oil

I recently bought a '97 A6 from Audi that was an off-lease car. It is now time for the oil change. Should I use synthetic or conventional, and what grade?
Also, what about an additive like "Slick 50"?

Thanks,

Michael

Default Slick 50 is a scam. Synth or mineral won't matter if you change oil every 7k

Slick 50 is basically oil with globs or PTFE or Teflon. The particle is too big to do any good between the really tight spaces in your engine. If it had any value don't you think manufacturers would be all over it?

People that buy Slick 50 are the same people that but 3 layers of spoilers for the back of their car and 50 fog lights in front - because all those things REALLY make your car go faster. Racing stripes also make cars go faster.

Prolong Oil (another scam but only a semi-scam) is probably the best thing to do if you really want to waste your money. It might be valuable during start-ups if your car hasn't been run for 2 or more weeks. At that time oil typically washes away from the upper cylinder walls and at start up there's literally no oil between the rings and cylinder walls. Prolong has a propensity to stick to metal and may be of some value in this condition. Otherwise, there's no usefullness of this oil over any other oil

Thanks for the input. Too many NASCAR ads is what made me think of it. What about K & H air filter? Does it really boost horsepower and fuel consumption or is that just a line of BS?

Default Before you install a K&N, you might want to read this

Default If you are really worried oiling your engine...

might I suggest a pre-oiler. This is basically a small pump that is activated when the ignition of the car is turned to the on position. It starts pumping oil to the tops of the valve train. Once the engine starts it shuts off. They typically cost about $150 but it sure beats throwing away expensive oil.

GO QUATTRO!

Default Amsoil!

Michael... I am going to switch both of mine over to Amsoil synthetic oil and Amsoil filters. It is expensive but I'm convinced of the long term protection it will offer. Before doing this, though, I will flush the engines to remove the built up gunk from conventional oil use in the past. Also I am going to switch to Amsoil high-flow air filters... no huge HP gain or anything but they will let the air flow a little better than stock filters without letting too much dust into the engine.

Amsoil filters are about $30 and oil and filters run $50-$60 per oil change, depending on the grade of oil.

If you decide to order Amsoil, go through http://www.jgriff.com. Jim gave me a bunch of oil and Audi advice and earned my business!
>>Muhammad
