3.7 front trak issue

My 97 3.7 FT A8 with 288000 miles is finally giving me a little headache...

Torque converter is not engaging properly, and this caused me to wonder whether this tranny is the same as the A6 front trak. That should increase availability of used parts, rather than forking out 4-5K for a new or rebuilt (installed)

Any ideas?

Yeah, - and the 260K are personal, so anyhoo - why kill a good thing - afterall NO RUST (thanks alcoa) - good compression and great gas mileage (27 mpg hwy)- well thats all it does..

WOW- a new high mileage winner for the A8!! I don't know if the tranny is common with the A6.......

but I doubt it- the power & torque output of the two engines is quite different, I believe. Search the forum for "rebuilt transmission"- there are places you can get good rebuilts for ~$2K. Congrats on showing the rest of us what these magnificent vehicles are capable of!

What can you tell us about preventive maintenance? It looks like you're the expert!

Since I got it in 99 with just under 30 K miles on it, main feature has been oilchanges at ~8000 miles intervals, did the 90k check-up, changed radiator at 175K, fuelpump at 200K, and just changed trannyfluid to see if it would take care of problem (before I got the fault code). Aside from that - just wear and tear - brakes/shocks and plugs. Bear in mind, that I do between 4 and 6K miles /month - and my mechanic is an independent VAG specialist.
