Horn does not work when car is OFF
Guys, this seems to be common on many german cars, happened on my old B5 as well. Thing is, 2 times now the wife has been waiting parked for me to be picked up, and some idiot not looking in his mirrors closely has almost smashed into the car. Her gut reaction is to slam on the horn, but of course that yeilds nothing if the car is off (which it is when she's parked waiting).
Any ideas on why this is designed like this, or how one would go about enabling the horn?

I agree that the horn should work when the car is off.. HOWEVER
what is your wife doing parking in a possible lane of traffic without her hazards on?
If this is the second time your wife has had an accident because of this, maybe she should park in a parking spot when she's waiting for you rather than sit in a lane of traffic.

Lots of cars are like that.
Our ML320 had a horn that was always connected (german car...dunno), and it was a pain because I'd accidentally hit it while fumbling into and out of the car. That's my best guess as to why they disconnect it. The assumption is that if you're sitting in the car the ignition's on. It's also like asking...why does Volvo make their headlights switch off with the car, whereas Audi keeps the parking lights on but the high beams off, and american cars keep the full beams on...
