Let me see if I understand this correctly. When a high profile politician cheats on their .....

income taxes, it's called a honest mistake? When the average taxpayer, me for example, cheats on paying income taxes, it's called Income Tax Evasion?

i think it's just cause they're such high profile individuals...

both occurances were for small dollar amounts. Presumably (but not, since theyre politicians and therefore equate to the devil) it was a mistake, and not corrected in time. I had a similar issue on last years taxes, resulting in me owing the government some dollars, no harm, i paid and all was forgotten. I wonder why they couldn't have just paid what they owed and gone on with their lives... Just an instance of the media making something big of something not so big. obummer.

But how much cheating wasn't caught? My rule of thumb with my accountant & .....

tax attorney is: take everything we are entitled to by law and everthything should be black or white. No grey, unless it's defendable in court. Perhaps this approach may make me pay more than my fair share, but I sleep well at night.

there were more than just 2 tax frauds and a few were for over $100K, not a small amount...

Honestly I don't care if it is $10 or $10M. I know what would happen to me, I was audited after selling a business in 1998; it was painful and expensive. Some of these folks didn't even see any penalties like I did, even though the debts were years old.
