Default overheating while driving. Ok while idling.

Have a 2002 225 TTR with 70K miles. Have not changed water pump or timing belt. Have green thermostat which is 3 years old.

Car 3 days ago overheats while driving. However within 10 seconds of idling, temperature goes back to normal.

I am assuming that the water pump and fans are OK if the car cools down this quickly.

Is this some type of valve or bypass circuit issue that prevents the coolant from circulating while driving?

Thanks for any help.

Possibly you have lost part of the plastic water pump impeller.

Cooling OK at idle not at speed.

This happened to my co-worker with a 2003 Jetta.

Since you are at 7 years old and that mileage it's due for changing anyway.

BTW green sensor is a coolant temperature sensor, not a thermostat.

Completely different animal.

And yes the thermostat could also be a problem.
