Default I think I found my answer.

After searching and searching I came across a post that makes sense to me. I now realize that the cam locking bar and crank pin are a must. Otherwise you are at best matching the timing of your old belt which has stretched itself slightly out of time. After looking at pictures of the locking bar I also realize that the cam gears are supposed to be exactly horizontal. They become slightly off from the belt stretching. As much as it pains me to wait until next weekend, I must. Thanks

Lots of people do the belt without the cam tool. It's a little iffy, but it can be done.

Just answered your other post. A cam bar isn't required. The biggest thing a cam bar does is keeps the camshaft from moving to their neutral position from spring pressure.

If you want some confidence, try putting the belt off a tooth and look how far off the pulley will be.
