Default what is the purpose of these...(mystery solved on pg 4)

On the bottom edge of the deck lid are two rubber bumpers...that much I understand...but, in the middle of the bumper, what looks like a philips head screw is actually a spring-loaded plunger that pops out with a quarter turn of ascrew driver. Any one know what the device is all about?

When they are extended they create initial push to help actuator.

but why the option to have them on or off?
I never have seen one in the on (out) position in an A8.
I remember in the old days these kind of switches were use to trigger interior lights and to warn of a door been open.
hope somebody knows this one.

On my '04 they have been "out" since I bought the car in late '05. Never knew they were spring loaded until today.

I don't have them either (MY04 Euro Spec).

Maybe something to with assisting the auto boot? I know that my boot has to be manually lifted the first 1/2 inch to let the car know to continue to open it otherwise it closes again. I.e. With them extended and boot popped, they will assist in pushing it up to ensure that it opens and doesn't close again??

Just a thought.

I have an 05 and I just figured out I have them as well; and frankly have the same issue where I have to assist the trunk by lightly pulling it to get up.
