Overheat then automatic shut down?

Default Overheat then automatic shut down?
Ok so I was on the highway yesterday when all of a sudden my 2003 A6 temperature started buzzing. I pulled over, sure enough it was getting too hot. I waited about 15 minutes, poured some water into it and tried to make it home. Got about 5 miles then the car shut off on me just as I was coasting down the off-ramp. Called AAA and got a tow the rest of the way, sure enough there was fluid on the flatbed. I had assumed a coolant leak anyway but now that I've filled up the reservoir the engine still won't crank. Is there some reason the ECU isn't letting me turn the car over? Maybe a sensor to prevent the block from cracking if it gets too hot?

hope you didnt seize the engine... did you think to check the oil temp gauge?

That is my main hope as well. Oil temp wasn't even in the middle at 250 (If I had to estimate I'd say at the time of the overheat it was about 200)

I'm hoping it wasn't hot for long enough to do any serious damage but will find out tomorrow when I take it to a friend's and read the VAG codes

No such thing as automatic shut down...it runs until something is damaged/seized.

Before you try to spin it over pull the spark plugs, make sure no coolant in cylinder hydrolocking.

Agree with possible hydrolock. Pull the plugs and see if it will crank. If not then you did something really bad.

How long since last TB service? Picturing seized WP which overheated engine, broke TB, and possibly warped the heads.
