Default My first Audi - 1250 mile impression

So 2 weeks ago, my black on black A6 Prestige was delivered. The only option I really have other than the Prestige package is the LED headlights. And I requested them due to a comment on here that said it was their favorite part of the car. BTW, I agree, other than getting on an onramp. I did to get the sport package and thought long and hard about this one. This was a coin oss and the final answer came down to dollar and sense. I just felt the tire replacement aggravation was not worth the sport package. I would put this in the category of to each their own. I almost bought the same car with the 20's as well. But the added price and the the louder drive eventually made me just buy one with no sport package. If money was not an issue and I had zero concerns about pulling in front of a client's office with 20's, I would have pulled the trigger. But to me, quite frankly, the 18's are smooth, quiet, and I have no regrets about that. The only small regret is that I did want side assist. Mostly, I wanted the mirrors to pull in. But as there was not one available and that would mean going from a one week wait to a 3 month wait, I decided against it. The dealership I worked with was great and I felt they were extremely straight with me. I initially was told there would be no black on black Prestiges unless it was fully loaded. But once I engaged with someone who know the sale was lost, they really made me feel great. I would highly recommend Crown in Clearwater, FL for an Audi.

Anyhow, so I thought i would write a few comments as of the first 1250 miles. First, this is the nicest car I have ever owned. So for those coming from a BMW or a Mercedes, perhaps this review will have no merit. But I am simply blown away by this car. I went on today and found the closest gas station with the best prices. It is all on the info button on the MMI. One of my favorite features is the blue tooth connectivity. I know this is in many cars. But this is just so darn easy. I am a Spotify person and I have may playlists synched to my android. And immediately, they are playing in my car. I do not use an iPod or a SD card only because everything in synched and I find no use for them at this time. Who knows, maybe later I will. I can control Spotify (or Pandora) from my phone or from the MMI. I will say that sometimes when I enter the car, it immediately starts playing my google voice messages. I have not figured that one out yet. But it is not biggie as I just turn it off. The GPS is a little hard to understand. For example, I have not figured out how to see my next move when it is a little bit away. I was driving arose the state last week and I could not figure out where is my next exit. I obviously like to know that. Now, once I was close within 3 exits or so, it did alert me. But I think knowing that would have been nice. I am fairly certain it is there. I just have not figured that out yet. I do not think the Prestige's stereo system is all that and splurged a bit on a new sub box in the trunk mostly because I wanted some of the other features. IMHO, it is probably not worth the price But that being said, I am very glad I have the Prestige. Now that I have the sub, holy cow!!! I love it. I came from a Volvo and the stereo in the car was great. While this one has a very clear sounding system, it lacks the umphhh that I like. Others may not care, but I noticed this and once I noticed it, I had to fix it. Another thing that I think is interesting is the trunk. It is funny/awkward closing it. It is a bit light and I sometimes have to push it 2 or three times to secure it. Now, I all put this in the category of nitpicking. As it is no big deal at all. And I know having so much aluminum in a car means a lighter exterior, including the trunk. I just thought I would comment.

I also noticed this car is much longer than it looks. I have had to get out of the garage and return to the car to move it back or my garage would not close several times. Again, this is more of a positive than a negative. But anyone who thinks this is not a big car should try parking it in their garage first.

I did get the Brilliant Black and have seen the comments about the swirl. I did wash it once and it came out looking great. So hopefully this will stay the same. I live in Florida and only buy black cars. Fashion over logic is in play here, but I am happy with my color choice. And I feel that the black interior with look good for a long time. Again, this is 100 opinion and just my preference. That is initially why I had problems finding this car. All in all, I am so happy with this car. I am probably not the best critic as I come from a Volvo C70 and before that a 4runner. So this car is simply in another class. But I wanted to share some of my impressions after having he car for a bit. I will close with, every day I learn something new about the car. And it is always something positive. So for those on the fence, all I can say is, I highly doubt you will regret this car.

Nice write up!

I am coming from a long history of Acuras, and this too will be the nicest car I've ever owned.

I have read a lot of similar complaints about the Bose stereo and the sub... I will probably drop in an open air 10" in the OEM slot, and drop a 300~ watt amp on it.

I ordered just about the same as you, but went with the 18" sport package.. the lowered suspension and paddle shifters was worth it... plus it came with 18" all seasons, and they are fairly quiet..

i didnt get Side Assist, and am now regretting it also.. I didnt realize it included the power mirrors... i thought that only came with the driver assist... and no way i was spending $2600 for that...

My wait time has been about 6 weeks so far, and still counting.. hoping for delivery by next week!!

Love the review, and I must agree both of you, as this is by far the nicest car I've ever owned. I got a chuckle out of your parking in the garage story. I was doing the same exact thing first few times I tried parking in my garage. As for the upcoming dirrections far in advance there is a route info button. When in the nav screen, hitting either the top left or bottom left button on the MMI, can't recall which one it is at this exact moment, will take you to a scren that will have your route in a list format.

Nice write up and congrats on your car.

Side Assist is definitely a must have IMO. The folding mirrors are cool but the feature has saved my butt a couple of times. Must be the B-pillar, but I'm still not used to the blind spot like I was on the C6 or my other cars.

Congrats on your car. Good to read your thoughts. Besides LED lights (which I'm still OK with not getting ), I got everything worth getting myself, including side assist. I really wanted to get folding mirrors since my wife brok side view mirrors in my earlier bimmer while parking car in the garage Everything else was just gravy in that package.
I came from driving a 2010 A6 but even so, find lot of like (and some dislikes) in 2012. It's surely a joyride.

You can also switch on the turn by turn instruction on the Navi, that will tell you which exit you will take on the highway. There is also a distance to next exit or turn on the small screen between the gauges as well.
My favorite part about the A6 is that it is a big car, but it drives like a small car.

Thanks for the tips. I will give it a try on my next trip. I do love the google earth feature. But I do find myself turning it off once in a while as the non google earth screen has some good info as well. I am not sure what I will do when my six months expires on that. I have a feeling I will continue. But I am not sure right now.
And I could not agree more that it does drive like a small car. I wish I had driven some of the older models so I could feel the difference. I cannot imagine a smoother ride. It is like the salesman told me after spending two hours with me teaching me the basics of the MMI. 'The technology is great, but wait till you drive it.' He was dead on. I find myself taking the long way often.

Again, thanks for the tips on the Navi....will try them out.

I'd like to second that the 2012 A6 is a long car. It looks a lot smaller and shorter than it is. I definitely use my rear camera to make sure I've pulled in (and the front ultrasound to make sure I've not pulled in too far). It sure doesn't drive as large as it is. It feels like a much smaller car when acclerating or cornering. But in close quarters, watch out, it is long and it turns long.
